Introducing Copilot Cowork
Microsoft has significantly enhanced its AI assistant, 365 Copilot, by introducing a groundbreaking feature called Copilot Cowork. This new tool is specifically
designed to handle projects that extend beyond simple, single-step commands, focusing instead on work that develops over time. Copilot Cowork is engineered to manage multi-stage tasks with a high degree of autonomy. Users can articulate their desired end result, and the AI will then devise a comprehensive plan, interact with relevant applications and documents, and actively advance the work. Crucially, it provides continuous progress updates, allowing the user to intervene and guide the process whenever necessary. This advanced capability is built upon the same technological foundation that powers Anthropic's Claude Cowork, integrating sophisticated skills from both Claude and Microsoft to offer a robust solution for complex, ongoing work.
Smarter Researcher with Critique
The Researcher feature within Microsoft's 365 Copilot has undergone a significant upgrade, now featuring a powerful 'Critique' function that enhances its ability to address complex questions. Instead of relying on a single AI model, this enhanced system utilizes two distinct AI models to achieve superior results. As described by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, this 'multi-model deep research system' allows for the generation of optimal responses and reports by having multiple models collaborate. In practice, one AI model is tasked with outlining the research plan and generating an initial draft. Subsequently, a second AI model, acting as an expert reviewer, meticulously examines and refines this output before the final, polished response is delivered to the user. These AI models are sourced from leading AI research labs, including Anthropic and OpenAI. Microsoft reports that this advanced Researcher with Critique capability demonstrates a 13.8% improvement on the DRACO benchmark, the industry's standard for evaluating the quality of deep research by measuring accuracy, completeness, and objectivity.
Model Council for AI Insights
A novel addition to the Microsoft 365 Copilot suite is the 'Model Council' feature, which empowers users to directly compare the outputs of different AI models when addressing the same query. This tool provides an immediate visual comparison, highlighting areas of agreement and divergence among the various AIs. Users can readily identify unique perspectives or information that each model contributes, offering a comprehensive understanding of the AI landscape for a given question. Microsoft likens this functionality to having access to a team of researchers simultaneously. This allows for a more nuanced understanding of complex topics, as users can see how different AI architectures interpret and respond to information, fostering a more informed decision-making process and a deeper dive into research questions by cross-referencing multiple AI viewpoints.
