Wheels Coming Loose
Tesla is once again in the spotlight for a peculiar issue with its highly anticipated Cybertruck. The latest recall, prompted by a notification from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), concerns a defect that could lead to the wheels detaching from the vehicle while in motion. Specifically, this affects 173 rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck Long Range models manufactured between 2024 and 2026. The root cause, as identified by Tesla and detailed in the NHTSA report, lies in the intricate relationship between the brake rotors and the wheel assembly. It appears that cracks can develop around the stud holes on the brake rotors. This structural weakness can then lead to the wheel studs, which are critical for securing the wheel to the hub, separating. In layman's terms, the very components designed to keep your wheels firmly attached might fail, posing a significant safety risk. Tesla attributes this issue to an excessive amount of grease on the lug nuts, which apparently compromises the necessary friction, allowing for movement and stress under normal driving conditions. The proposed solution involves a comprehensive replacement of the front and rear brake rotors, the wheel hubs, and the lug nuts, all to be performed at no expense to the owners.
A History of Oddities
This latest recall is not an isolated incident but rather the eleventh for the Cybertruck since its introduction less than two years ago, a frequency that has begun to draw more attention than the vehicle's futuristic design. The truck's recall history reads like a compilation of internet memes, featuring issues that range from the mildly inconvenient to the downright bizarre. Previous recalls have addressed problems such as accelerator pedals becoming stuck in place, stainless steel exterior trim panels unexpectedly detaching and becoming projectiles, windshield wipers malfunctioning, inverter faults leading to a complete loss of power, delays in rear camera display, and even a recall for warning text on the display that was deemed too small to be legible. The surreal nature of the current situation—a vehicle marketed for its robustness and ability to withstand extreme conditions facing a recall due to potentially separating wheels—highlights the growing peculiarity of the Cybertruck's journey to market. While recalls are a standard part of the automotive industry, the sheer oddity and viral nature of the Cybertruck's problems have captured public imagination, leading to questions about whether this series of unusual events is becoming an intrinsic part of the Cybertruck ownership experience. Despite the small number of affected vehicles and Tesla's commitment to resolving the issue, the headlines generated by these events are far from ordinary.
