Platforms Down
A substantial technical glitch has crippled OpenAI's widely used services, ChatGPT and its coding counterpart, Codex. This widespread outage has left a significant
number of students, developers, and professionals unable to proceed with their tasks, impacting both the web-based applications and their mobile counterparts. Data from Downdetector indicates that over 3000 users in key regions like the US and India were affected by this disruption. User reports highlight that a substantial majority, with over 80% experiencing problems, were unable to access the ChatGPT platform. During the time of the reported issues, attempts by the Times of India tech team to access ChatGPT via the web did not immediately reflect the reported problems, showing the platform as responsive. The outage was not confined to a single function; users reported comprehensive failures across the board, encompassing the primary ChatGPT interface, the dedicated mobile application, and the Codex system, which is crucial for programmers in code generation and debugging.
OpenAI Investigating
OpenAI officially acknowledged the ongoing disruption through its status page, confirming that the issue was actively being investigated shortly after reports of the outage began to surge. The company has yet to release a specific cause for the service interruption or provide an estimated timeline for restoration. "We're currently experiencing issues," a statement on the status page read. "Users are unable to load ChatGPT, Codex, and the API Platform. We are continuing to investigate the issue for the listed services." Additionally, the company indicated that users might have encountered problems with ChatGPT Business, particularly after upgrades or when adding new seats, with these issues potentially lasting up to an hour. A mitigation strategy had been implemented, and recovery was being closely monitored for this specific business-related feature, which had been ongoing for approximately eight hours at the time of reporting.
Recent Similar Incidents
The current service interruption impacting OpenAI's prominent AI applications follows closely on the heels of recent technical difficulties experienced by another major player in the AI space, Anthropic. Just days prior, Anthropic's platforms, including their AI assistant Claude and associated APIs, suffered multiple outages over a three-day period. These repeated disruptions left a considerable number of users unable to access their AI services, highlighting a broader trend of instability in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence platforms. The recurrence of such significant outages underscores the complex challenges involved in maintaining robust and consistently available AI infrastructure for a growing global user base.
