Pioneering Mars Explorer
The landscape of space exploration is shifting dramatically, moving from the heroic astronaut archetype of the Moon landing era to that of private citizens,
including prominent figures from the business world. Chun Wang, a successful cryptocurrency billionaire known for his roots in Bitcoin mining, is slated to be a central figure in a forthcoming SpaceX Starship endeavor. While the precise launch date remains unannounced and contingent on the successful development and safety certification of Starship for deep-space missions, the overarching objective involves a trajectory that would take the spacecraft and its crew past the planet Mars before returning to Earth. This mission signifies a monumental leap beyond the suborbital excursions that have recently captured public attention, such as Blue Origin's NS-31 mission in April 2025, which carried notable personalities on a brief journey to the edge of space. Wang's planned expedition, reportedly spanning approximately two years, represents a far more demanding test of both human endurance and spacecraft capability, potentially marking him as one of the first individuals to journey towards the Red Planet, even without a landing.
Building Towards Mars
SpaceX's ultimate ambition has long been centered on reaching Mars, and Starship is the vehicle engineered for this monumental goal. However, the program is still in its advanced testing phases. The twelfth flight test of Starship, designated V3, launched on May 22, 2026, after an initial delay due to a launch tower issue. This uncrewed test reportedly met a majority of its objectives, including successful stage separation and the deployment of a mock Starlink satellite. The mission concluded with a splashdown in the Indian Ocean, which involved a controlled and fiery end, as recovery or reuse of this experimental craft was not part of the test plan. Crucially, Starship has yet to carry human passengers, underscoring that Wang's proposed Mars flyby remains a future prospect, heavily reliant on SpaceX demonstrating Starship's capability to safely transport people on extensive voyages beyond Earth's orbit. Prior to this potential deep-space mission, Wang gained valuable orbital experience by commanding SpaceX's Fram2 mission in 2025. This Crew Dragon flight successfully transported four civilian astronauts over Earth's polar regions for several days, providing him with practical experience in spaceflight, which is a prerequisite for such an ambitious undertaking.
