Bridging the Gap
WhatsApp is pioneering a groundbreaking feature that transcends the boundaries of its user base, enabling direct communication with individuals who haven't
yet joined the platform. This innovative functionality, referred to as "Guest Chats," allows a WhatsApp user to initiate a conversation with someone outside the app by sharing a secure web link. The recipient can then join the chat directly through their web browser on any device, be it a mobile or desktop, without the prerequisite of downloading WhatsApp or creating an account. This development aims to democratize communication, making it easier for people to connect across different platforms and fostering broader accessibility. Initially observed in development in October 2025, the feature has now begun to appear for select beta testers on both Android and iOS versions of the app, signaling its progress towards a potential public release. The underlying technology ensures that these temporary exchanges are protected by the same end-to-end encryption that secures all standard WhatsApp conversations, providing a robust layer of privacy and security for all participants involved.
How Guest Chats Work
The "Guest Chats" feature operates on a simple yet effective principle: generating a unique, secure web link that acts as an invitation to a temporary chat session. When a WhatsApp user decides to leverage this functionality, they can create this special link, often found within an "Invite a friend" section or at the end of their contact list. Once generated, this link can be disseminated through various channels – it can be sent via SMS, copied and pasted into emails, or shared across different messaging applications. The recipient, even if they don't have WhatsApp installed, can simply click on the provided link. This action will open a secure chat interface in their web browser, allowing them to engage in basic messaging with the WhatsApp user. A distinctive "Guest" label will be prominently displayed next to the non-WhatsApp user's name within the chat, clearly identifying their status. This visual cue ensures that participants are aware of who is an official WhatsApp user and who is joining as a temporary guest.
Limited Functionality Explained
While the "Guest Chats" feature offers a convenient way to connect with non-WhatsApp users, it's important to understand its current limitations. This functionality is designed primarily for basic text-based communication and does not support the full spectrum of features available in standard WhatsApp conversations. Specifically, group chats are not an option for guest sessions. Furthermore, sharing media files such as photos, videos, documents, GIFs, stickers, or voice messages is not supported within these temporary chats. Additionally, users cannot engage in voice or video calls with guests. This streamlined approach ensures a lightweight and efficient experience for temporary interactions, prioritizing the core messaging aspect. For functionalities beyond basic text exchange, both parties would need to transition to a standard WhatsApp conversation or an alternative platform that supports richer media sharing and calling features. The feature is still in beta, so some of these limitations might be addressed in future updates.
Security and Expiration
The "Guest Chats" feature is built with security and ephemeral communication in mind. Despite the temporary nature of these conversations, WhatsApp assures that they are protected by the platform's robust end-to-end encryption. When a guest joins a chat, WhatsApp Web generates a unique identifier that is subsequently used to establish an encryption key specifically for that particular chat session. This ensures that the conversation remains private and secure between the participants. Beyond security, these guest chats are also designed to be temporary. They are programmed to expire automatically after a period of 10 days of inactivity. If no messages are exchanged within this timeframe, the chat session will be concluded. Should the inviter wish to continue messaging with the same individual after the chat has expired, they will need to generate a new invitation link to re-establish the connection. Guests can also be blocked by the initiating user, mirroring the blocking functionality available for regular WhatsApp contacts, providing an additional layer of control for the user.
