New Era of Rail Travel
Train travel between the bustling metropolises of Bengaluru and Mumbai is set to undergo a significant transformation with the official approval of the Vande
Bharat sleeper train service by Indian Railways. This new venture aims to provide a superior travel experience, addressing long-standing demands for enhanced speed and convenience. While the precise launch date, exact route details, and specific stopovers are yet to be officially declared, sources indicate that the full schedule will be released imminently. This approval follows a period of active consideration by railway authorities, signaling a commitment to modernizing inter-city rail connectivity and offering a more appealing alternative to existing services and other modes of transport. The prospect of faster, more comfortable journeys has already generated considerable excitement among commuters who frequently traverse this vital corridor.
Comparing to Current Services
Currently, the primary rail link between Bengaluru and Mumbai is served by the Udyan Express, a train that has been in operation since 1983. Despite technological advancements in the railway sector over the decades, the Udyan Express maintains a relatively leisurely pace, taking over 22 hours to complete the extensive 1,139-kilometer journey. This duration is considerably longer than that of bus services, which typically manage the route in approximately 16 hours. Importantly, railway officials have indicated that the introduction of the new Vande Bharat sleeper train is not intended to replace the existing Udyan Express. Instead, it will operate as an additional service, offering a distinct and upgraded travel option for passengers seeking a more expedited and comfortable passage between these two economically significant cities.
Potential Route and Travel Time
Indications from Central Railway sources suggest that the new Vande Bharat sleeper train is likely to follow a route mirroring that of the Udyan Express, which includes key stops at Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal. It is noteworthy that a Vande Bharat train is already successfully operating on the Mumbai to Solapur segment, indicating a degree of logistical familiarity with parts of this planned corridor. Railway authorities have confirmed that there are no foreseen technical impediments to introducing a sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train. Commuters and trade activists are keenly awaiting the announcement of the final travel time, with a common expectation that the journey should ideally be completed within 16 to 17 hours. This timeframe is considered crucial for maximizing the benefit to passengers by offering a substantial reduction compared to current rail and even bus journey durations, thus making air travel less of a necessity for those prioritizing speed and convenience.
