It would be daunting for me to raise my hand and clear my doubts in a room full of people. But things have been different since I started using AI chatbots.” This sentiment highlights a growing trend where AI serves as a conduit to circumvent potentially awkward real-world exchanges, a pattern observed by mental health practitioners as increasingly prevalent. The allure lies in AI's non-judgmental and pressure-free environment, where immediate responses are not expected, and imperfections are not met with criticism. This preparation leaves her feeling more composed and less overwhelmed when she does engage in human conversations. However, this habit inadvertently replaces the spontaneous, small interactions that naturally occur with friends, colleagues, and family members.
The Double-Edged Sword of Comfort
The ease derived from avoiding social discomfort through AI interactions can inadvertently reinforce tendencies towards social withdrawal, according to psychiatrist Dr. Deeksha Kalra. She posits that AI chatbots possess the capacity to amplify behaviours associated with introversion or social withdrawal by offering an escape from uncomfortable social scenarios, potentially creating a cycle of negative reinforcement. Dr. Kalra distinguishes between mere discomfort and genuine disorder, emphasizing that introversion itself is not pathological, as introverts can function effectively in social settings but simply prefer solitude. The concern arises when AI becomes a replacement for, rather than a supplement to, human connection. For individuals predisposed to avoidance or social withdrawal, AI can become an easy avenue to retreat further into isolation. Paliwal notes that a significant appeal of AI is its lack of social repercussions; unlike human interactions, which may involve judgment or opinion formation, AI offers unconditional acceptance for both rational and irrational thoughts. This non-judgmental aspect attracts users who find human interaction unpredictable or draining, but it carries risks. This can lead to mirroring, validating, and amplifying delusional thinking, with reports suggesting conversations with AI might even contribute to religious delusions of grandeur.
Data Concerns and Skepticism
While many find solace in AI interactions, not all experiences are reassuring, and some users remain wary of potential misuse. A finance professional from Pune, who preferred to remain anonymous due to workplace confidentiality, recounted an unsettling experience with Duck.AI, a privacy-focused chatbot. Despite the AI's seemingly considerate responses to a query about a strained friendship, the interaction ended with further questions, leaving the user uncomfortable and unwilling to continue. A primary concern was the potential for the AI to leverage personal disclosures for manipulative purposes against vulnerable individuals. Experts, including Dr. Srinivas Padmanabhuni, CTO of AiEnsured, acknowledge these apprehensions, framing them within the broader context of user data misuse. While direct manipulation through shared conversations is a grey area, the risks associated with data exploitation are tangible. Dr. Padmanabhuni explains that the spectrum of risks ranges from conversations being used for model improvement to more nefarious applications like targeted phishing or deepfake creation, where inferred personal information or behavioral patterns could be exploited for financial gain, identity theft, or reputational damage.
