Widespread Service Disruption
An advanced AI system recently encountered a significant service interruption, its second major outage in merely three days. This disruption commenced
around 14:53 UTC (8:23 pm IST) and, at the time of reporting, the AI chatbot remained inaccessible. User complaints escalated rapidly, with Downdetector registering approximately 6,500 reports. These issues were categorized across different functions, including the primary chat interface (36%), its coding assistant (30%), and the general application (25%). Technicians testing the platform confirmed the inaccessibility on mobile devices, while web access yielded error messages such as 'Service is temporarily busy. You can try again shortly' and 'Page not found. Claude can help with many things, but finding this page isn’t one of them.'
Company Acknowledges Issue
Anthropic, the organization behind the AI, officially confirmed the problem, labeling it a 'Partial Outage' on its status page. The company indicated an 'Unresolved incident: Elevated errors on Claude.ai, API, Claude Code.' Engineers swiftly identified the root cause and communicated that they were actively engaged in implementing a solution for the login errors. By 15:20 UTC (9:50 pm IST), Anthropic reported that the Claude API had been successfully restored, though efforts to resolve other service issues were ongoing. At that point, the company stated, 'The Claude API has fully recovered as of 8:01 PT / 16:01 UTC. We are currently working on mitigating the ongoing errors for Claude AI. Claude Code users who are logged in are still able to use it, but logging in is still broken.'
Resolution Efforts Underway
Further updates from Anthropic indicated progress in resolving the remaining technical difficulties. The company stated, 'We have seen success rates for login to Claude.ai, including via Claude Code, stabilize and are working to fully resolve this issue. We will provide an update shortly.' Despite these ongoing mitigation efforts, the recurrence of such system failures is becoming a point of concern. This marks the second major outage within a three-day timeframe, following a similar 'major outage' the previous week. On April 7, both the conversational AI and its associated coding tools experienced significant operational disruptions, being rendered 'out of order' for an extended period, raising questions about the system's stability.
