Capturing Hidden Gems
Uttar Pradesh Tourism is ushering in World Heritage Week 2026 with two innovative campaigns designed to involve the public directly in celebrating the state's
heritage. The 'UP Heritage Through My Lens' initiative encourages individuals of all ages to act as visual storytellers. Participants are invited to explore and document lesser-known or overlooked heritage locations, such as quaint local temples, ancient stepwells that have stood the test of time, vibrant traditional market streets, or even unassuming forts and shrines that hold significant cultural value but might not be widely recognized. The focus is on capturing the essence of these places through photography and short video reels, making heritage accessible and encouraging a fresh perspective. This approach aims to highlight the rich cultural fabric that defines Uttar Pradesh, going beyond the typically celebrated monuments to embrace the nuances of local history and tradition. The minister emphasized that the goal is to foster pride in one's roots, particularly among the younger generation, by allowing them to engage with heritage in a personal and creative manner. The accessibility of mobile phones makes this a simple and inclusive endeavor for everyone.
Personal Artifact Stories
Complementing the visual documentation of sites, the 'Share Your Personal Treasure' campaign invites a more intimate exploration of heritage. This initiative calls for participants to submit a tangible object that holds personal or familial significance, accompanied by a brief narrative. The types of items that can be shared are diverse, ranging from antique coins passed down through generations, poignant handwritten letters that tell stories of the past, cherished traditional jewelry, heirloom utensils that have graced countless family meals, to vintage photographs that capture moments frozen in time. This campaign emphasizes the deeply personal connection people have with heritage, making it particularly relatable for families and elders who often act as custodians of these valuable artifacts. By broadening the definition of heritage to include these personal mementos, the state aims to weave together local histories and individual narratives, creating a more comprehensive and relatable picture of Uttar Pradesh's cultural legacy.
Participatory Tourism Shift
These initiatives represent a significant stride towards fostering participatory tourism, as highlighted by the Additional Chief Secretary for Tourism, Culture, and Religious Affairs. The core idea is to empower citizens to actively contribute to the process of documenting and showcasing heritage. By involving the public, the tourism department seeks to uncover and identify culturally important places and traditions that possess strong local relevance but might not yet be on the mainstream tourism radar. The hope is that through these citizen-led efforts, such valuable sites and practices can be gradually integrated into the broader tourism framework of the state. This collaborative approach ensures that heritage preservation and promotion are not solely the domain of official bodies but are enriched by the collective knowledge and passion of the people who live amongst and cherish these historical and cultural assets.
How to Join
Participation in these World Heritage Week campaigns is straightforward. Individuals can submit their entries in the form of photographs or short videos, ensuring adherence to specific formats designed to maintain authenticity and quality. For the 'Share Your Personal Treasure' category, a concise written account detailing the object's history and personal significance is a mandatory accompaniment to the visual submission. Excitingly, top entries across both categories stand a chance to win special prizes, offering tangible recognition for participants' efforts. Furthermore, select submissions from the 'Personal Treasure' category will be given a prominent platform, with plans for them to be showcased at the State Museum and formally acknowledged at a state-level event. The deadline for all submissions is April 18, 2026, and interested individuals can find registration details and further information on the official website of Uttar Pradesh Tourism.
