Humiliation to Hustle
At the age of 59, Devni Devi felt compelled to contribute financially to her family. Her initial venture, a modest tiffin service for students, was met
with derision, dismissed as 'chhota kaam' or insignificant work by her relatives and even some within her own household. Undeterred by the scorching Patna heat and the lack of support, she poured her heart into preparing nutritious, home-style meals, mirroring the food she cooked for her own family. She was driven by the observation that students living away from home were often served substandard food. This initial pricing of just ₹20 per meal, while reflective of her humble beginnings, was also a source of judgment, with some questioning her husband’s earning capacity. These hurtful remarks even caused her husband to distance himself for months, yet Devni Devi persisted, fueled by the positive reactions of the students who savored her cooking.
Pandemic Pivot
The culinary journey of Devni Devi faced a significant challenge with the onset of the pandemic, which forced many students to return home, drastically reducing her tiffin service operations. However, rather than succumbing to the adversity, she ingeniously adapted her business model. She shifted her focus to delivering meals directly to individual households, catering to a new customer base. The authentic taste and quality of her food quickly re-established demand, proving that even in difficult times, culinary excellence could find its audience. A turning point arrived when her son, Durgesh, a communications professional, began showcasing her work on social media. The photographs and videos of her cooking resonated deeply with online users, significantly amplifying her reach and popularity, laying the groundwork for further expansion.
Empire Built
Today, Devni Devi's modest kitchen endeavor has blossomed into a thriving food empire, boasting an impressive annual turnover of ₹2.5 crore and providing employment for 15 individuals. What began as a simple tiffin service has evolved into a full-fledged restaurant named 'Amma's Kitchen,' complete with a popular takeaway outlet. A key differentiator for her business is the extraordinary loyalty of her repeat customers. Remarkably, Devni Devi, who can only sign her name and does not engage with smartphones or social media, has achieved this success without a formal marketing strategy. Her family occasionally shares content online, but the consistent growth is attributed to the undeniable quality and sincerity of her food. Her son Durgesh emphasizes that the magic lies in 'quality, consistency, and honest work,' a principle they learned directly from his mother's unwavering dedication.
Empowering Others
Devni Devi’s personal triumph extends beyond her own business success; she is a beacon of inspiration for other women, actively encouraging them to pursue their own entrepreneurial ventures. She often prompts educated women she encounters with the question, 'Tum to padhe-likhe ho, tum kama kyun nahi lete apna?' (You are educated, why don't you earn for yourself?). Her strong belief in financial independence for women stems from her own experiences and her desire to see them empowered to support their families just as men do. Her son Durgesh proudly shares that 'Amma's Kitchen' is now among the top five most ordered food establishments in Patna. He reflects that his mother's life has taught them a profound lesson: 'good work always pays,' a valuable insight that has made her a role model for thousands.
