Intelligence Leads to Arrest
Acting on precise intelligence and sophisticated digital profiling, officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) were strategically positioned
at Terminal 2 of Mumbai airport. They anticipated the arrival of a group of passengers traveling on flight KQ 202, with the intention of intercepting them after they had passed through the green channel, a common tactic given the high volume of travelers. The operation was meticulously planned to apprehend the suspects discreetly amidst the busy arrival area, aiming to prevent any immediate escape or disposal of illicit goods.
Suspicious Behavior Noticed
Around 11 AM, as the group of passengers approached the green channel, they appeared to notice the presence of vigilant DRI officials. This observation led them to deviate from their path. When questioned by the authorities, 25 individuals presented their identification. However, the 26th person was found to be in possession of a fake passport, and was subsequently detained. Despite the scrutiny, the 25 passengers initially denied carrying any smuggled items. The initial denial was short-lived as a search of two individuals revealed gold bars cleverly concealed within their footwear, marking the first tangible evidence of the smuggling operation.
Gold Recovered Amidst Discard
The situation escalated when some of the suspects began to discard objects wrapped in black tape near the luggage belts, a clear attempt to offload incriminating evidence. DRI officials swiftly recovered multiple pouches containing melted gold bars. None of the passengers present at the time claimed ownership of these discarded items, a common tactic in smuggling operations to avoid direct culpability. This recovery, combined with the gold found in the shoes, solidified the DRI's findings, leading to the apprehension of the 26 Kenyan nationals and the seizure of nearly 30 kilograms of gold.
