Sharing Message History Explained
WhatsApp introduced a valuable feature to address the common issue of new members joining group chats and lacking the context of previous discussions.
Previously, individuals added to an active group would only see messages posted after their entry, rendering earlier conversations and references inaccessible. This new functionality, rolled out on February 20 and now widely available on both Android and iOS, empowers group administrators to share a portion of the message history with individuals being added. This ensures that newcomers can quickly catch up on essential discussions and understand the ongoing flow of conversations, preventing them from feeling out of place or needing constant explanations from existing members.
Enabling History Sharing
Admins have the flexibility to control whether message history can be shared with new members. This setting can be toggled on or off to suit the group's needs. To manage this, open the specific group chat, then tap on the group's name at the top of the screen. Navigate to 'Group permissions' and locate the 'Send message history' option. From here, you can select either 'on' to allow sharing of past messages with new joiners, or 'off' to disable this capability. This granular control ensures administrators can maintain privacy and manage information flow effectively within their groups.
Android Sharing Steps
For Android users looking to add a new member and share message history, the process is straightforward. Begin by opening WhatsApp and navigating to the group chat. Tap on the group's name at the very top of the screen. As an alternative, you can also long-press the group chat from your main WhatsApp screen and select 'Group info' from the options that appear. Once in the group info, you can search for the contact's name or phone number to add them. After initiating the addition, you'll find a 'Message History' button. Tapping this will allow you to choose the number of recent messages you wish to include for the new member. Finally, tap 'Add members' and confirm by clicking 'Continue'.
iOS Sharing Steps
On iOS devices, sharing message history with new group members follows a similar, intuitive path. First, open your WhatsApp application. You can either enter the specific group chat or long-press it from your main chat list. Tap on the group name to access its details. Next, look for and tap the 'Add' button to bring in new participants. You can then search for and select the contacts or phone numbers you wish to add to the group. Upon reaching the point of adding members, you will see a 'Message History' button. Here, you can select the desired quantity of past messages to send to the newcomer. Once you have made your selection, tap 'Done' to confirm, followed by 'Add members' and 'Continue' to finalize the process.
Admin Permissions & Availability
It's important to note that to utilize the message history sharing feature, you must hold administrative privileges within the WhatsApp group or possess the specific permissions granted by an admin to add new members. This ensures that control over group additions and information sharing remains with designated individuals. The WhatsApp message history feature is entirely free to use, with no associated charges for users. Furthermore, the functionality is designed to be used when adding a new member to the group; you cannot send the message history to someone who has not yet joined.
