Pioneering 6G with ML
The Indian Institute of Science, through its Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), has launched an insightful online course dedicated to the intersection
of Machine Learning (ML) and 6G wireless communication. This program, running from May 4 to July 29, 2026, features live virtual classes scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays, from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Spearheaded by Prof. Sudhan Majhi, an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, the course is tailored for individuals eager to understand and contribute to the evolving landscape of wireless technologies. It forms a key component of the CCE Proficience Programme, which aims to deliver postgraduate-level education in specialized engineering and scientific fields, ensuring participants gain cutting-edge knowledge relevant to industry advancements.
Eligibility and Fees
To be considered for this advanced program, applicants should possess a Bachelor of Engineering (BE), Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Technology (M.Tech), or a PhD in a pertinent engineering or scientific discipline. Notably, final-year BE or B.Tech students are also encouraged to apply, opening doors for aspiring engineers. A foundational understanding of wireless communication principles and basic Python programming is a prerequisite for successful participation. The comprehensive course fee is set at Rs 23,954, inclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST). This amount comprises a base fee of Rs 20,000 and an application fee of Rs 300, both of which are subject to an 18 percent GST. Interested candidates can submit their applications through the official online admissions portal managed by the institution.
AI, ML in 6G
The curriculum places a significant emphasis on the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) within the physical layer of communication systems. Participants will delve into adaptive transmitter and receiver designs, focusing on enhancing system performance and minimizing communication delays. The course content is meticulously aligned with the latest 3GPP standards, which increasingly integrate AI and ML methodologies into the research and development frameworks for future 6G networks. The learning journey will encompass various ML paradigms, including supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised learning techniques. Students will gain hands-on experience with prominent models such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Deep Neural Networks (DNN), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. Furthermore, the course will touch upon advanced topics like transfer learning and practical implementation using Python.
Technical Modules
The technical modules offer a deep dive into core wireless communication systems, covering essential technologies like Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), and Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation (OTFS). Additionally, participants will explore sophisticated techniques such as Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoding, modulation classification, and channel estimation. The program also addresses critical areas like Channel State Information (CSI) compression, beamforming strategies, Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction, and spectrum sensing, all discussed within the context of current 3GPP standards. Signal estimation techniques leveraging AI and ML will be a key focus, including parameter estimation, symbol rate estimation, and timing offset (STO) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation. Resource allocation topics will also be explored, such as efficient spectrum sharing and optimal power allocation strategies.
Programme Framework
The CCE Proficience Programme at IISc is designed as a collaborative endeavor, fostering partnerships between the institute and esteemed professional bodies situated in Bengaluru. The courses are strategically scheduled during evening hours, making them accessible for professionals and students with existing commitments. Delivery is primarily conducted online through synchronous sessions, ensuring real-time interaction and engagement. Upon successful completion of the course and any requisite examinations, participants will be awarded grading certificates, officially issued by the Indian Institute of Science. This program is particularly beneficial for professors, students, researchers, and industry professionals who possess a background in science and engineering and are keen to advance their expertise in cutting-edge technological domains.
