Crane Collapse Details
In the early hours of Wednesday, a substantial 400-tonne mobile crane, actively involved in the construction of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, experienced a catastrophic
failure. The incident unfolded near the Asian Heart Hospital junction in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a bustling commercial hub. At the time of the collapse, the crane was engaged in the critical task of lifting a pre-cast beam, an essential component for the elevated metro line. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) indicated that the mishap was attributed to a mechanical failure within the crane itself. The contractor responsible for this section of the project is J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. While the collapse was severe, initial reports from the scene stated that no fatalities occurred, though several workers sustained injuries. The immediate aftermath saw senior MMRDA officials rushing to the location to oversee the complex clearance operations and strategize the quickest possible reopening of the affected road stretch to alleviate traffic congestion.
Recovery and Traffic Management
Following the alarming incident, a coordinated effort was initiated to address the fallen behemoth. The MMRDA promptly announced that a more robust, 600-tonne crane was being mobilized to the site. The primary objective of this larger crane is to safely and effectively retrieve the toppled 400-tonne equipment. In parallel with the recovery mission, extensive coordination with the Mumbai traffic police was established. Vehicular movement has been significantly diverted from the junction and surrounding routes to ensure unimpeded access for the recovery machinery and personnel. The MMRDA has emphasized their commitment to minimizing inconvenience to daily commuters and restoring normal traffic flow as swiftly as operational constraints allow. As a precautionary measure and in response to the gravity of the collapse, additional safety checks are being rigorously implemented across the entire construction site to prevent any recurrence of such incidents and to ensure the ongoing safety of the workforce and the public.
