Rumors are circulating that Google is engaging in strategic talks with Marvell Technology, a move aimed at collaborating on the development of advanced,
custom-designed artificial intelligence (AI) processors. This potential alliance signifies Google's ongoing commitment to bolstering its AI hardware infrastructure. The Information's report suggests that Google is specifically interested in Marvell's expertise to create Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). These are highly specialized chips engineered for singular, intensive tasks. The focus for these new chips is reportedly on AI inference, the critical process where AI models analyze data and generate responses for users. By optimizing inference, Google aims to achieve greater speed and significant cost reductions in operating its AI services at a vast scale, ensuring its AI offerings remain efficient and accessible as demand grows.
Broadcom's Shifting Position
For an extended period, Broadcom has been a pivotal partner for Google, instrumental in the production of its renowned Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), which are central to its AI capabilities. While the prospect of a new collaboration with Marvell might initially appear to pose a challenge to this established relationship, current indications suggest that Broadcom's position is not under immediate threat. This is largely attributed to a recently solidified agreement between Google and Broadcom, which has secured their partnership through the year 2031. Nevertheless, the introduction of Marvell into the mix provides Google with increased strategic leverage. This allows Google to potentially negotiate more favorable terms with Broadcom and reduces its reliance on a single entity for its core AI processing hardware, fostering greater flexibility and resilience in its technological backbone.
Diversifying AI Ecosystem

Companies such as Meta and Apple are reportedly among those benefiting from this open-door policy, with Apple, for instance, leveraging Google's infrastructure for its re-imagined Siri. Furthermore, Anthropic recently announced a significant new agreement with both Google and Broadcom, securing substantial capacity for next-generation TPUs, expected to become operational from 2027 onwards. This strategic diversification, including the potential pact with Marvell for chip development, is crucial for Google.
