Dreamer Joins Meta
Meta Platforms has made a significant move to bolster its artificial intelligence division by onboarding the talented minds behind the AI startup Dreamer.
This acquisition brings in the founders and the entire core team of Dreamer, a company established earlier this year with the primary goal of simplifying the creation of personalized AI agents. Notably, this integration marks a notable return for co-founder Hugo Barra, a former Meta executive and a veteran of Google. Barra, along with former Stripe CTO David Singleton and former Google design lead Nicholas Jitkoff, will now be part of Meta's Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Under the guidance of Meta's Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, this new group will concentrate on developing sophisticated autonomous bots capable of executing tasks on behalf of human users, thereby advancing Meta's AI infrastructure and expertise.
Vision for Personal AI
David Singleton, co-founder of Dreamer, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting a shared vision with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Singleton noted that after demonstrating Dreamer's capabilities to Zuckerberg earlier this year, it became evident that both leaders envisioned a future where billions of individuals could harness the power of creating custom software to enhance their daily lives. Dreamer's core philosophy was centered on the belief that software should be personal and adaptable, shaped directly by the user. The primary obstacle they identified was the inherent difficulty most people faced in building software. This acquisition signifies Meta's endorsement of this vision, recognizing the immense potential and immediate need for such user-centric AI tools. The deal allows Dreamer to continue as a distinct legal entity while granting Meta a non-exclusive license to leverage its innovative technology.
Dreamer's Impactful Tech
Dreamer's platform has already demonstrated remarkable success, enabling thousands of users to build personalized, intelligent software using natural language, specifically English, as their primary programming tool. The 'Sidekick' feature has empowered individuals to create unique agents for a wide array of purposes, ranging from managing emails and calendars to developing educational tools for children, facilitating language learning, planning social events, and even assisting with work tasks and personal health goals. These agents are as diverse as the individuals who build them, addressing highly specific and personal needs that traditional software companies often overlook due to their niche nature. This highlights Dreamer's success in democratizing software creation, allowing users to solve problems and express themselves in ways previously unattainable, proving the resonance of their approach and the immediate relevance of their technology.
Meta's AI Investment
This strategic hiring is part of Meta's broader and aggressive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and talent. During a January earnings call, Zuckerberg emphasized the profound advancements in AI agents, particularly their utility in internal engineering and coding. Wang echoed this sentiment, affirming Meta's strong conviction in AI agents as they work towards creating 'always-on' AI integrated across various software platforms and wearable devices. This Dreamer acquisition follows a series of substantial investments in the agent space, including a $2 billion deal for Manus in December and the recent acquisition of Moltbook. In June 2025, Meta also invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and recruited its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to bolster its AI efforts, bringing along a number of Scale AI employees as well.
