A Surprising Overture
In early 2025, a private dialogue between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk revealed an unexpected turn in their often publicly critical relationship. Court
documents unsealed on March 27th highlighted an invitation from Musk to Zuckerberg, proposing a collaboration to acquire OpenAI. This wasn't a casual suggestion; it emerged within the context of Musk's ongoing legal battle with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. The exchange, dated February 3, 2025, began with Zuckerberg reaching out to Musk with support for his work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), offering assistance in content moderation to protect Musk's team. Following this supportive exchange, where Musk responded with a simple heart emoji, the conversation pivoted dramatically to the future of OpenAI.
The OpenAI Acquisition Idea
Elon Musk directly posed the question to Mark Zuckerberg: "Are you open to the idea of bidding on the OpenAI IP with me and some others?" This proposal was part of a larger strategy Musk was developing to potentially acquire OpenAI's intellectual property, aiming to assemble a coalition of interested parties. Zuckerberg's response was characteristically brief and to the point, suggesting a preference for immediate, in-person discussion by stating, "Want to discuss live?" This led Musk to arrange a call for the following day, indicating a serious interest from his side in exploring this potential venture. However, despite this private communication and Musk's subsequent efforts, including identifying Zuckerberg in documents related to a letter of intent for potential financing or investments in OpenAI, neither Zuckerberg nor Meta officially joined the bid or signed any agreements.
