Meta, a titan in social media and messaging, is embarking on an extraordinary venture: securing solar power beamed directly from space to fuel its burgeoning
AI data centers, particularly during nighttime hours. This initiative stems from a significant capacity reservation agreement with Overview Energy, a Virginia-based startup. The deal involves Meta reserving up to one gigawatt of power from a planned constellation of geosynchronous satellites, positioned approximately 22,000 miles above Earth. These satellites are designed to continuously capture sunlight in orbit and transmit it back to Earth as low-intensity near-infrared light. Meta's existing ground-based solar farms will then convert this transmitted light into usable electricity. This innovative system promises a consistent supply of solar power, unaffected by the diurnal cycle, a crucial development given the massive energy consumption of AI services. In 2024 alone, Meta's data centers consumed over 18,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity, an amount comparable to powering about 1.7 million American homes for a full year, highlighting the urgent need for scalable and reliable energy solutions for AI operations.
Overview's Ambitious Timeline
The escalating demand for AI-powered features and services necessitates innovative energy solutions, especially since conventional solar panels are limited to daytime operation unless supplemented by costly battery storage. Meta's strategic move to draw power directly from space, where solar energy is abundant, addresses this challenge head-on. Overview Energy has mapped out a clear deployment strategy, starting with a demonstration in low Earth orbit in January 2028. Following this, full commercial operations from geosynchronous orbit are anticipated around 2030. The company aims to deploy a fleet comprising up to 1,000 spacecraft, capable of covering roughly one-third of the planet's surface with its power-beaming capabilities. This ambitious project has the potential to attract other energy-intensive industries and companies seeking sustainable and uninterrupted power sources, marking it as a potentially transformative innovation in the energy sector.
