The Problem of Waste
The issue of food wastage is a significant concern, often stemming from overestimation of demand or last-minute cancellations in food establishments. During
his MBA studies at the Indian Institute of Management, Nagpur, co-founder Mathews Martin witnessed firsthand how perfectly good food from the student mess was discarded simply because there was no viable alternative for distribution. An idea to share this surplus with a nearby AIIMS hospital, catering to patients and their families, could not be materialized, leading to the food being thrown away. This experience highlighted a systemic inefficiency where edible food meets a premature end, despite potential avenues for consumption and assistance.
Plenti's Innovative Solution
To address this pervasive problem, Plenti, an app-based marketplace, was developed. This innovative platform was initially launched in Thiruvananthapuram in October 2025 and subsequently expanded its reach to Kochi in March of the current year. Plenti acts as a bridge, listing various food businesses including restaurants, bakeries, and supermarkets that have surplus or unsold food available at the end of their operational day. The core of its offering is making this food accessible to consumers at a fraction of its original cost – specifically, one-third the price. This strategy not only benefits consumers with affordable meal options but also provides a dignified solution for food that would otherwise contribute to landfill waste, thereby promoting a circular economy model for food.
