Tallinn, the vibrant capital of Estonia, has launched an ambitious program to fast-track the creation and deployment of sustainable urban solutions. This
initiative, known as Tallinnovation, is a collaborative effort between the Tallinn City Government and the Tallinn Strategic Management Centre. Its primary objective is to stimulate groundbreaking ideas in crucial urban sectors, including enhancing energy efficiency, optimizing waste management processes, and advancing smart mobility systems. The program actively seeks proposals from a diverse range of entities, such as commercial enterprises, academic institutions, and emerging startups. Participants will have the invaluable opportunity to implement and evaluate their proposed pilot projects within the actual urban landscape of Tallinn, gaining access to essential city data, established infrastructure, and specialized expertise. Furthermore, the testbed environment is designed to encourage strong collaborative relationships with city administrators and other key stakeholders, fostering a dynamic ecosystem for innovation and practical application. Resilience and Security Focus
Beyond general sustainability, this year's Tallinnovation competition places a significant emphasis on developing technologies that bolster Tallinn's resilience, fortify its security measures, and improve its crisis preparedness. This targeted approach reflects the city's commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of its inhabitants, businesses, and visitors, even in the face of unforeseen challenges. While the primary focus is on these critical areas, the competition remains open to innovative solutions across various smart city domains. The organizers, the City of Tallinn and Tehnopol Science and Business Park, are actively seeking technologies that contribute to a more comfortable, secure, and efficient urban environment for everyone. Martin Goroško, business development manager at Tehnopol, highlighted the growing necessity for companies to validate their innovations in real-world settings, moving beyond mere theoretical development. Tallinnovation aims to provide precisely this crucial platform, expediting the transition of novel ideas into practical, beneficial applications for the city.
International Piloting Opportunities
A significant enhancement to this year's Tallinnovation program is the inclusion of an international piloting opportunity, allowing selected companies to test their solutions not only in Tallinn but also in Heidelberg, Germany. This expansion offers participants an exceptional chance to gain valuable exposure to foreign markets and assess the adaptability of their technologies within different urban contexts. Last year, innovative Estonian projects, such as a remote-controlled electric taxi service, a smart plant growing cabinet, and an advanced electric car charging solution, were successfully piloted in Heidelberg, demonstrating the potential for cross-border collaboration. This international dimension is crucial for fostering export capabilities among participating companies, enabling them to refine their offerings for global applicability and identify new avenues for growth. The competition aims to facilitate this by providing direct experience in international urban environments and a platform to prove the effectiveness of their smart city solutions on a wider scale.
Funding and Eligibility
The Tallinnovation competition offers substantial financial support to selected projects, aiming to alleviate the economic burden associated with piloting new technologies. A total of up to €150,000 is allocated among the participating companies, with individual projects potentially receiving up to €30,000. Furthermore, the partnership with Heidelberg includes access to the Heidelberg City Fund, which provides an additional €25,000 for projects, with each receiving between €5,000 and €10,000. To be eligible for entry into the Tallinnovation competition, companies must be officially registered at an address within Tallinn. This requirement ensures that the benefits of the program directly contribute to the local economy and innovation ecosystem. The application window for this exciting opportunity is open, with submissions accepted until 4 May, providing a clear deadline for interested innovators to prepare and submit their proposals for a chance to shape the future of urban living in Tallinn and beyond.
