New Verification System
Discord is introducing a mandatory age verification system worldwide beginning in March 2026. This initiative aims to enhance user safety by automatically
placing every account into a restricted, teen-focused environment until users confirm they are adults. To gain access to content and functionalities designated for mature audiences, individuals will be required to undergo an age check. This can be accomplished through advanced AI-powered facial analysis, which estimates age, or by submitting a valid government-issued identification document. This policy shift is a proactive measure by Discord to align with international safety standards and control the distribution of potentially sensitive or graphic material across its platform.
Features Without Verification
For users who opt not to complete the age verification process immediately, much of the core Discord experience will remain unaffected. Daily interactions such as sending direct messages, participating in general chat servers, engaging in voice calls with friends, and joining established gaming communities will continue to function as usual. The platform is designed to ensure that essential communication tools remain accessible to everyone. However, any content or features specifically marked as adult or age-restricted will be inaccessible. This includes entry into certain specialized servers, participation in Stage channel voice discussions, and the ability to view content that is otherwise filtered or flagged as sensitive, which will appear blurred by default. Additionally, some granular controls for message requests and notification settings might be limited until verification is completed, signifying that the full suite of Discord's capabilities is contingent upon confirming adult status.
Unlocking Full Access
Discord acknowledges that requiring personal verification, especially through methods like facial scans or ID submission, may deter some users. Despite potential pushback, the company emphasizes that its primary objective is to foster a more secure online environment, particularly for younger users, by establishing a safer default setting for all. The intention is to move away from a completely unmoderated space. The good news for existing users is that their fundamental Discord activities will persist without interruption. Direct messages, regular server interactions, and voice chats with friends will continue to operate smoothly. However, to experience the platform without any limitations – including access to adult-themed servers, potentially explicit content, and all areas of late-night gaming hangouts – users must successfully verify their age. This process acts as a gatekeeper, ensuring that only verified adults can access the full spectrum of content and features Discord offers, akin to a digital venue checking identification at the entrance.
