Understanding Cancellation Nuances
When booking flights, especially in advance, it's prudent to be aware of potential cancellation scenarios. Airlines typically implement fees to discourage
last-minute changes, and these policies can vary significantly. It's crucial to scrutinize the terms and conditions associated with your ticket at the time of purchase, as differences can exist not only between airlines but also within different fare categories offered by the same airline. This due diligence is essential to prevent unforeseen financial impacts should your travel plans necessitate a cancellation. The following comparison aims to illuminate these policies for prominent Indian carriers, based on information available as of April 5, 2024, to empower you with knowledge.
Air India's Fare Structure
Air India's approach to cancellations and changes involves distinct fees based on cabin class and the proximity to the departure time. For economy 'Comfort' fares, cancelling a ticket incurs a ₹ 4,000 charge, with fees escalating to ₹ 3,500 if done within 72 hours of departure. For 'Flex' fares in Business Class, cancellations are free if made over 24 hours prior, but a ₹ 2,500 fee applies within that 24-hour window. Similarly, First Class cancellations are free if initiated more than 24 hours before departure, with a ₹ 2,500 charge for cancellations within the 24-hour window. Changes to tickets also incur fees, with the economy 'Comfort' fare attracting a ₹ 3,000 change fee. 'Flex' fares in Premium Economy and Business Class offer free changes if made more than 72 hours or 24 hours in advance, respectively, with varying fees for changes made closer to departure.
IndiGo's Dynamic Pricing
IndiGo's cancellation charges are structured across various fare types like Lite, Regular, and Flexi Plus, with distinct rates for domestic and international routes. Domestically, for cancellations within 0-3 days of departure, a fee of INR 3,500 or the airfare charges, whichever is lower, is applied. For bookings made 4 days or more in advance, this fee reduces to INR 3,000 or the airfare charges, whichever is lower. However, the Flexi Plus Fare offers a significantly reduced cancellation charge of INR 500 for bookings made 4 days or more in advance. International flight cancellations follow a similar tiered approach, with higher potential charges up to INR 6,500 (or airfare, whichever is lower) for immediate cancellations, and up to INR 6,000 for earlier cancellations. The Flexi Plus international fare has a notably low cancellation fee of INR 1,000 for bookings made 4 days or more in advance.
Akasa Air's Flexible Policy
Akasa Air presents a differentiated cancellation and change fee structure across its 'Saver' and 'Flexi' fare categories. For cancellations made within 0-3 days of departure, both 'Saver' and 'Flexi' fares incur a charge of ₹ 3,350, with the 'Saver' fare potentially being 100% of the airfare if lower. For changes within this 0-3 day window, the fee is also ₹ 3,350 plus any difference in base fare and taxes. When cancelling 4 days or more prior to departure, the 'Saver' fare has a charge of ₹ 3,100 or 100% of the airfare (whichever is lower), while the 'Flexi' fare incurs a significantly reduced charge of ₹ 500 or 100% of the airfare. For changes made 4 days or more in advance, the 'Saver' fare incurs a fee of ₹ 2,850 plus fare difference, and the 'Flexi' fare allows for changes with only the difference in base fare and taxes to be paid, making it a more adaptable option for travellers.
SpiceJet's Cancellation Framework
SpiceJet outlines its cancellation and change fees with specific scenarios tied to the booking and departure timelines. Cancellations made within 24 hours of booking are free, provided the flight's departure is more than seven days away. For cancellations made within 96 hours of flight departure (but not falling into the 24-hour booking window), a charge of ₹ 3,600 applies. If cancellation occurs before 96 hours of departure, the fee is ₹ 3,100. Regarding changes, modifications within 24 hours of booking are subject to the fare difference only, given the departure is more than seven days out. Within 96 hours of departure, a change fee of ₹ 3,350 plus any fare difference is applicable. For changes made more than 96 hours before departure, the fee is ₹ 2,850 plus the fare difference, offering a tiered structure based on how far in advance changes are requested.
Regulatory Refund Mandates
Under Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regulations, all airlines operating in India, including Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air, are obligated to provide a full refund for ticket costs if a flight is cancelled by the airline itself or by the passenger. This also extends to situations where a flight experiences a delay exceeding three hours. The refund process is mandated to be completed within 30 days of the cancellation date. However, there are specific circumstances where these refund obligations might be altered. For instance, in cases of natural disasters or other force majeure events, airlines may be exempt from offering full refunds. Furthermore, passengers initiating a cancellation very close to the departure time might still be subject to cancellation fees, as outlined in each airline's individual policy.
