Comprehensive Cabin Overhaul
Air India has undertaken a complete 'nose-to-tail' renovation of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, VT-ANT, a project that went far beyond a superficial refresh.
This extensive refurbishment took place at Boeing's Modification Center in Victorville, California, and involved a meticulous 45-day process that consumed over 12,800 man-hours. The aircraft's interior was entirely stripped down and rebuilt from the ground up. This included the installation of brand-new seating, carpeting, upgraded galleys, and modern lavatories, fundamentally reimagining the passenger environment. Beyond the cabin, the exterior also received a fresh coat of Air India's new livery at AeroPro’s paint facility in San Bernardino. The sheer scale of the endeavor is evident in the thousands of meters of fabric, leather, and carpeting used, alongside the dedicated efforts of a 20-member team who spent over 5,700 hours repainting the aircraft's exterior, underscoring a commitment to deep-seated improvement.
Shift to Three-Class Configuration
A key enhancement for passengers on the retrofitted Boeing 787-8 is the transition from a two-class to a three-class cabin layout. This strategic change aligns the aircraft with the premium standards set by Air India's newer fleet, such as its Boeing 787-9. The redesigned interior now accommodates 20 private Business Class suites, each featuring a 1-2-1 configuration for direct aisle access, sliding doors, and fully flat beds, positioning Air India closer to the offerings of top global airlines. Adjacent to this is the Premium Economy class, offering 25 seats in a more spacious 2-3-2 arrangement that provides enhanced recline and comfort for those seeking an upgrade without the full Business Class price. The largest segment is the Economy Class, comprising 205 ergonomically designed seats in a 3-3-3 layout, enhanced with improved entertainment systems and charging facilities. This multi-tiered approach caters effectively to the Indian market's growing demand for varied comfort levels and value.
Enhanced Technology and Comfort
The revamped Dreamliner places a strong emphasis on passenger comfort and cutting-edge technology across all seating tiers. The in-flight entertainment system has been upgraded to Thales Group's AVANT Up, providing every passenger with 4K QLED HDR touchscreens for a superior viewing experience. Collaborations with renowned seat manufacturers like RECARO Aircraft Seating highlight the airline's dedication to meeting international comfort benchmarks. Specifically in Business Class, the new suites offer advanced amenities such as individual privacy doors, vanity mirrors, multiple charging ports, and ambient lighting inspired by traditional Indian design. These improvements translate directly into a more restful experience on long-haul flights, increased personal space, and a significantly more engaging entertainment selection for all passengers.
Broader Fleet Modernization Plan
This significant cabin retrofit is part of a larger $400 million initiative by Air India aimed at modernizing its entire legacy widebody fleet. The plan is to upgrade an additional 25 Boeing 787 aircraft over the next year, with two already in the process of refurbishment. Furthermore, the airline intends to update its fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Upon completion of this ambitious program by 2027, the improvements are projected to enhance the travel experience on over 300 weekly flights connecting India with major destinations in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. This comprehensive upgrade addresses long-standing criticisms regarding outdated cabins on international routes, positioning Air India as a more formidable competitor on the global stage and aiming to eliminate the perceived trade-off between national carriers and onboard comfort.
