Card Transition Explained
Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) is officially discontinuing its proprietary CMRL travel card. Commuters are now required to make the switch to the Singara
Chennai Card, which is integrated with National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) technology. This strategic move, in line with national guidelines, aims to create a unified and efficient ticketing system across India's public transport networks, including metro, monorail, and buses. The transition is scheduled to be fully implemented by May 1, 2026. Passengers holding the older CMRL cards are advised to transfer any remaining balance to either the new Singara Chennai Card or a QR Stored Value Pass (SVP) via the CMRL mobile application to avoid loss of funds. CMRL assures commuters of its ongoing commitment to providing a secure and reliable travel experience and apologizes for any temporary inconvenience this change may cause.
Managing Old Card Balances
For those still possessing a CMRL travel card with an existing balance, it is crucial to take proactive steps to safeguard these funds. Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has provided clear directives on how to manage this remaining value. You have two primary options for transferring your money. Firstly, you can opt for a QR Stored Value Pass (SVP), which can be generated and managed through the official CMRL Mobile App. This option offers a digital solution for accessing your travel funds. Alternatively, and in line with the broader transition, you can transfer the balance directly to a Singara Chennai Card, which functions as a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). This ensures your funds are accessible on the new, unified card system for future metro journeys or for use at metro parking facilities. It is imperative to complete these transfers before the full discontinuation of the old card system to ensure you do not lose your invested travel credit.
Singara Chennai Card Features
The Singara Chennai Card, issued in collaboration with the State Bank of India, represents a significant upgrade in public transport payment solutions. This is not merely a transit card; it's a contactless, dual-interface EMV chip-enabled prepaid card designed for enhanced security and convenience. Its core functionality is stored value, enabling seamless payments across various modes of transport like the metro, monorail, and buses. Beyond transit, the Singara Chennai Card extends its utility to everyday retail transactions and e-commerce, offering a versatile payment experience. A unique feature of this card is its dual-compartment system: one for transit (offline balance), used exclusively for travel fares, and another for retail (online balance), which can be utilized for general purchases, and even ATM withdrawals if full KYC (Know Your Customer) procedures are completed. This integrated approach simplifies payments and provides a more comprehensive financial tool for commuters.
