Milestone Achieved
Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has celebrated a significant achievement, officially welcoming its 400 millionth passenger since commencing
operations. This landmark event was reviewed during the 134th Board Meeting of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), chaired by Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. The meeting delved into the operational and infrastructure advancements that have propelled the airport through a notable growth phase. This expansion is largely attributed to a surge in international travel and the airport's strong performance in cargo handling during the fiscal year 2025–26. The airport is clearly on an upward trajectory, solidifying its importance in the aviation landscape.
Traffic Surge Detailed
In the fiscal year 2025–26 alone, KIA managed a substantial 44.47 million passengers, showcasing consistent expansion across both domestic and international travel sectors. International passenger numbers experienced a remarkable increase of 23.9%, reaching 7.23 million individuals. Concurrently, domestic travel saw a healthy uptick of 3.3%, with 37.24 million passengers. Overall, the airport witnessed a commendable 6.2% year-on-year growth in passenger traffic, a testament to enduring demand and Bengaluru's continuously improving global connectivity. The airport now provides direct flight services to over 78 domestic and 34 international destinations, reinforcing its position as a vital aviation nexus in Southern India.
Cargo Dominance
Complementing its passenger growth, KIA's cargo operations have also maintained impressive momentum. During the fiscal year 2025–26, the airport handled an impressive 532,000 metric tonnes of cargo, marking a 6% increase from the preceding year. This robust performance is supported by a network of 15 cargo airlines serving 38 destinations worldwide, connecting Bengaluru to critical global hubs such as Chicago, Singapore, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. The demand for cargo services is largely fueled by key industries including pharmaceuticals, agricultural exports, electronics, automotive components, spare parts, and e-commerce shipments. Notably, perishable cargo continues to be a significant contributor to the airport's success, with KIA proudly holding its title as India’s premier gateway for perishable exports for the fifth consecutive year.
Perishables Excel
The airport's expertise in handling perishable goods has been a standout feature. Over the past year, KIA managed approximately 60 million rose stems, with a notable 38% increase in volume and a substantial 64% rise in tonnage. Mango exports also saw a positive trend, growing by 12%, while coriander volumes rose by 13% compared to the previous year. This specialization in time-sensitive and delicate cargo further underscores the airport's advanced logistical capabilities and its crucial role in supporting India's export economy, particularly in the agricultural and horticultural sectors.
Operational Metrics
The airport’s operational efficiency is reflected in its air traffic movements, which reached 280,800 in FY 2025–26, a 4.5% increase year-on-year. This translates to an average of 769 movements per day, with a peak of 837 movements recorded on a single day. Passenger traffic also hit an all-time daily high, with 139,111 passengers passing through the airport, demonstrating the airport's capacity to manage high volumes seamlessly. These figures highlight the airport's robust operational framework and its ability to cater to significant travel demand.
Global Accolades
Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru's excellence has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. The airport garnered several prestigious international awards during the year, including being recognized as the “Best Regional Airport in India and South Asia” by Skytrax. It also received the “Best Airport at Arrivals Globally” award at the ACI ASQ Awards. Furthermore, KIA improved its standing in the Skytrax World Airport rankings, ascending from 48th to 41st place. Additionally, the airport enhanced its customer experience and accessibility accreditations from Airports Council International, affirming its commitment to superior service and operational standards.
Future Expansion
The BIAL board meeting also provided a platform to review ongoing and upcoming infrastructure development projects. These initiatives are strategically designed to augment the airport's capacity, bolster operational resilience, and ensure sustained long-term growth. Officials expressed confidence that the airport's continued expansion will further cement Bengaluru's status as a paramount global hub for both aviation and logistics, attracting more international connectivity and business opportunities.
