Elon Musk Takes A Dig At Amazon As AWS Faces Major Global Outage

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took a dig at Amazon Web Services (AWS) after a major global outage disrupted several popular websites and apps on Monday. The outage affected services like Snapchat, Fortnite,

Roblox, Signal and even some of Amazon’s own platforms such as Prime Video and Alexa.Musk, in his typical style, used the opportunity to promote X Chat, the messaging feature on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He said that X Chat was not affected by the AWS downtime and described it as a secure independent alternative.

"The messages are fully encrypted with no advertising hooks or strange 'AWS dependencies' such that I can’t read your messages even if someone put a gun to my head. You can also do file transfers and audio/video calls," Musk wrote on X.

Global Impact of AWS Outage

The AWS outage caused widespread issues across several major services. According to Amazon, the problems came from its US-East-1 region in Virginia, one of its biggest cloud hubs. AI startup Perplexity confirmed it was down due to the AWS issue, while other affected services included Robinhood, Roblox, Venmo, Chime, and Lyft."An outage affecting several services on the internet is also impacting Fortnite log-ins. We're investigating this now, and will update you when we have more details," Fortnite wrote on X.

Users in the UK were also affected, with banks such as Lloyds and Bank of Scotland, along with telecom providers Vodafone and BT, facing outages.On Downdetector, there are over 30,000 user complaints from across the globe. AWS has not offered any estimated timeline for a full resolution. This is probably one of the very few multi-service disruptions reported across the globe for this long period.
