Valmiki Jayanti 2025: Valmiki Jayanti, or Pargat Diwas, marks the birth anniversary of the Sanskrit poet Maharishi Valmiki. He is best known for authoring one of the most important epics in Hinduism, the Ramayana.

According to scriptures, it is believed he was an ardent devotee of Shri Ram. It is not known the exact date and time of Valmiki's birth, but popular belief mentions that when he was born, he had a full moon glow on his face. That is why it is assumed that he was born on the day of Purnima.One day, when Goddess Sita left Ayodhya and went to live in the forest, Valmiki gave her shelter. Eventually, she had Luv and Kush, and Maharishi Valmiki taught the Ramayana to the twins.Even today, his life story inspires millions, highlighting that anyone can transform their life and make a positive impact on society, regardless of their past.

Valmiki Jayanti History
Valmiki is known by many names such as Balmiki, Ratnakara, Lal Beg, and Bala Shah. It is believed that he was a dacoit named Ratnakar in his early years who used to rob people after killing them. His life transformed after meeting Narada Muni, who advised him to chant the word Rama.However, Ratnakar made several attempts but still could not get himself to chant the word, so Narada Muni asked him to say Mara, which is Rama spelt backwards in Hindi. After a period of long penance, Mara eventually turned into Rama. Lord Brahma was impressed by his devotion and bestowed him with the name Valmiki.After years of learning the scriptures under Sage Narada’s guidance, he was transformed and came to be known as Maharishi Valmiki.According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama met Valmiki during his exile. When Sita was banished, Valmiki offered her refuge in his hermitage, where she gave birth to the twins, Lava and Kusha, and Valmiki taught them the Ramayana.

Across India, Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated by many Hindu devotees. In some places, Shobha Yatra is carried out with an idol of Valmiki. Along with the procession, people sing devotional songs and shlokas, and some recite the Ramayana to remember Maharishi Valmiki.Various cultural events are also held in many parts of India to highlight Valmiki's contributions to literature and spirituality.Prayers are offered in temples across India to honour Maharishi Valmiki. These temples are decorated with flowers and lights, and devotees distribute free food as part of the celebration.One of the most well-known temples is the Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath Sthal in Amritsar, Punjab.
