On September 29, US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to announce that he would be imposing a 100 per cent tariff on movies made outside the country. While the rules are not clear about what
this tariff could mean for foreign films, especially Indian films that have a large diaspora audience in North America, some Indian filmmakers are looking at the situation with a positive light. The Metro In Dino... filmmaker Anurag Basu shared his view with Zoom and felt it could invigorate the box office domestically.
Anurag Basu responds to Donald Trump's movie tariff
Speaking with Zoom, Basu shared, "Trump's tariff on Indian movies could be a blessing in disguise, if we reciprocate on Hollywood releases, higher ticket prices for foreign blockbusters here would drive audiences to domestic films, more than offsetting any US losses. Think of it as box-office karma with better exchange rates." The director felt if Hollywood films in India also had a tariff just like Indian films in the US, the move could lead to audiences choosing Indian features over foreign. Furthermore, Anurag believed that the move could be financially better for the Indian industry in the long run. Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.
