Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called on women across India to take the lead in festive shopping as the new GST 2.0 regime comes into effect from September 22. Shah said the sweeping rate cuts would make everything cheaper - but urged women to ensure their shopping spree strengthens the Swadeshi movement."Diwali and Navratri will be coming soon. Everything you use will now have a GST of 0 per cent and 5 per cent instead of 28 per cent and 18 per cent. I want to tell the mothers and sisters of Delhi to do dadagiri (be the boss) at home and start shopping more and more from 22 September," Shah said while addressing an event in Delhi. The announcement was made as Shah unveiled over a dozen welfare schemes worth ₹1,723 crore, timed with Prime
Minister Narendra Modi's 75th birthday celebrations. However, the Home Minister paired his shopping pitch with a clear condition - buy only Indian-made products."Shop freely, but only buy things made in India, not outside. The time has come for every citizen of India to take a pledge to buy only what is made in our country," he said, echoing PM Modi's mantra of being "vocal for local".
'Swadeshi' Push Gains Momentum
Shah's appeal comes against the backdrop of a steep 50 per cent tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods in retaliation for New Delhi's Russian oil purchases. Just a day before the new duties came into force, PM Modi urged citizens to make 'Swadeshi' their "life's mantra".Shah reinforced the message, saying: "Promoting 'Swadeshi' should become our nature. Only then will the resolution of a prosperous India be fulfilled."
What GST 2.0 Means For Consumers
The GST 2.0 reforms, cleared during the 56th GST Council meeting, overhaul India's indirect tax system with a simplified two-slab structure. Most goods and services will now be taxed at 5 per cent or 18 per cent, while a steep 40 per cent "demerit rate" is reserved for luxury and "sin" goods. For consumers, this translates into major savings: Everyday essentials, earlier taxed at 12% or 18%, are now down to 5%. Beauty and wellness services including salons, gyms, yoga centres and barbers will attract just 5% GST, slashed from 18%. White goods such as air conditioners, televisions and dishwashers also become cheaper due to lower tax burdens.
