The filmmaker revealed that he had initially planned to cast late actor Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role. However, things did not go as expected. “I wrote Nishaanchi in 2016… I waited so much because I wanted to find the right people to make it with. I did try to make it with a star, it didn’t work out. Then I waited and I talked to a few more people and I realised that everybody eventually actually wants to be a big hero, big star,” Anurag said.

Kashyap also addressed the constant narrative of people labeling his return with every film, often expecting him to recreate the magic of
Gangs of Wasseypur or Mukkabaaz. Responding to that, he said, “When people say I am back, they want the Anurag of Wasseypur or Mukkabaaz. But Ugly is also me, na. Black Friday is also me. There are a lot of things to me, and I am not going to define the rest of my life based on whether I am back or gone. I have never gone, I mean, I have been making films." He added, "I have been very busy. I have had six films out this month. Two head the festivals and four one on each Friday. Aur mere paas bilkul samay nahin hai. Itna kaam hai. It’s not like I am gone anywhere. But I am not going to let anybody decide what I want to make.”
