Zubeen Garg Death: Assam Government Declares Three-Day State Mourning Ahead Of Funeral

The

untimely demise of renowned Assamese singer, Zubeen Garg, has shocked the nation. He died at the age of 52 in Singapore during a yacht party while swimming, allegedly without a life jacket. Medical reports determining the actual cause of death are yet to be released in the media. Following the loss, the Assam Government has declared state mourning from September 20 to 22.

State mourning in Assam

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been overlooking the case personally. On the official CMO’s page on X, a tweet read, “As a mark of respect, HCM Dr @himantabiswa has directed that State Mourning be declared from 20th to 22nd September 2025. During this period, all official entertainment, ceremonial programs and public celebrations will be in abeyance. Assam Government stands in solidarity with the people in mourning beloved Zubeen. His legacy will forever resonate in our hearts. **Essential service activities under 'Sewa Saptah' will continue, while ceremonial or benefit-distribution events stand postponed.”

Update on Zubeen Garg death

Mr Sarma, on X, tweeted, “I will be going to Delhi later today to receive our beloved Zubeen’s mortal remains from Singapore. From there we will immediately bring him back to Guwahati, hopefully by 6 am.”An FIR against Shyamkanu Mahanta has been lodged in Morigaon Police Station in Guwahati, as per the latest report. After Zubeen’s untimely death in Singapore on Friday, the manager of the 4th North East India Festival has been accused of foul play. According to local North East media publications, advocate Ratul Borah has filed the FIR.According to advocate Ratul Borah, Mahanta’s decision to invite Zubeen for the mismanaged event allegedly contributed to the 52-year-old singer’s demise. Advocate Borah also accused the event manager of negligence. The FIR further levelled allegations of criminal negligence, as the advocate argued that his conduct created circumstances that led to the fatal outcome.
