'Tax on Rs 1,000 Shirt Now Is...’: PM Modi Compares Pre 2014 Era with Post-GST Reforms
Noida: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday compared two tax eras, one before 2014 and the one post-GST, emphasising how the new tax rates and reforms have reduced the burden on the common man, significantly
on the poor and middle class.Addressing the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025, PM Modi compared the two tax eras and how a Rs 1,000 shirt used to cost then versus now.In a statement, PM Modi said that before 2014, there were so many taxes that neither businesses nor families could balance their budgets. He further said that a Rs 1,000 shirt that used to attract Rs 117 tax will now, after GST reforms, only attract Rs 35.
"Before 2014, there were so many taxes that neither businesses nor families could balance their budgets. In 2014, a Rs 1,000 shirt carried a tax of Rs 117. After the implementation of GST in 2017, that tax came down to Rs 50. Now, after the NextGen GST reform, only Rs 35 will have to be paid on a Rs 1,000 shirt," the prime minister said.
