on X. Speculations are rife that PM Modi may address the nation on the issue of GST as cuts will kick in from tomorrow, with the prices of a large number of products set to come down.
In a bonanza to consumers, the GST Council, comprising Centre and states, has decided to reduce tax rates on goods and services, from September 22 -- the first day of the Navaratri.Effective September 22, GST will be a two-tier structure wherein majority of goods and services will attract tax of 5 and 18 per cent. A 40 per cent tax will be levied on ultra luxury items while tobacco and related products will continue to be in the 28 per cent plus cess category.Currently, Goods and Services Tax (GST) is levied in 4 slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Besides, a compensation cess is levied on luxury items and demerit or sin goods.Furthermore, the address comes a day after the United States President Donald Trump-led administration raised the H-1B visa application fee to $100,000. The move is likely to significantly impact Indians working in the US. Notably, Indian tech professionals account for bulk of H-1Bs, over 70 per cent.
In an apparent reference to the visa fee hike, PM Modi on Saturday had said that India's main adversary is its dependence on other nations as he made a strong pitch for 'aatmanirbharta' and called for indigenous production of everything from semiconductor chips to ships."India is moving forward with the spirit of global brotherhood and India has no major enemy in the world today, but in true terms, India's biggest adversary is dependence on other nations," stated the Prime Minister, emphasising that this dependence must be collectively defeated.
