and UK are progressing towards a more consolidated efforts toward collaborating on filmmaking. With the United Kindgom being one of the most sought after shooting locations for movies in Bollywood, the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that three new Hindi films will be made in Britain from next year under the Yash Raj Studios. UK has in the past witnessed several films by YRF and even Dharma Productions, giving a boost to the ties between the two nations.
YRF's 3-film plan
During his trip to Mumbai, India for a trade visit, Starmer said in a statement on October 8 that YRF had committed to shooting three new Bollywood movies in locations across the UK. "Bollywood is back in Britain, and it's bringing jobs, investment and opportunity, all while showcasing the UK as a world-class destination for global filmmaking. This is exactly the kind of partnership our trade deal with India is destined to unlock," he said, according to Reuters.YRF will begin productions from early 2026 after an eight-year break from filming in the country. According to the government, this would help in generating around 3,000 jobs, and boost the economy "by millions of pounds."Strengthening cultural ties
Starmer is leading a delegation of more than 100 experts, including director Gurinder Chadha and British Film Institute (BFI) governors Monica Chadha and Andrew Smith, who is also Corporate Affairs Director at Pinewood Studios. Quoting Starmer, BFI said, "This is exactly the kind of partnership our trade deal with India is destined to unlock – driving growth, strengthening cultural ties and delivering for communities across the country."Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge's 30th anniversary
Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani, stated that the deal coincided with the banner's UK-shot hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) marking its 30 years. "It is truly special to reignite YRF and UK’s filming ties in the 30th anniversary of DDLJ – a film that is synonymous to UK-India’s relationship. Our company is currently producing the stage adaptation of DDLJ, the English musical titled Come Fall in Love (CFIL) in the UK too."Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released in 1995 and was a turning point for actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's careers.Do you find this article useful?
