A viral Reddit post has once again drawn attention to ''toxic workplace behaviour in India,'' sparking discussions about empathy — or the lack thereof — in corporate management. Titled “What should I do
with this kind of Manager?", the post captures an exchange between an employee suffering from a painful health condition and his ''unsympathetic'' branch manager, revealing the emotional strain faced by workers when genuine medical concerns are dismissed. As described in the post, the employee reached out to his manager explaining that he was unable to attend work due to severe discomfort from what he suspected to be haemorrhoids or fissures. He provided a doctor’s note and prescription to verify his condition, requesting a short medical leave. The employee messaged, “I am unable to sit or stand for a long time… please provide me medical leave for today." When there was no response, he followed up, saying his condition was still “not manageable.”However, rather than receiving understanding, the manager’s tone turned accusatory. “Who Tought You Descipline?" the superior asked, adding, “Look at the time when you are asking for leave. It will be a loss of pay for both the days.” Apologising for the inconvenience, the employee wrote, “Please understand my situation, sir, I am asking for medical reasons… I am sorry for not informing you about my inability to come to the office because of my health ailments."The situation escalated when the manager responded sharply: “Who will do you business? The more you run away from your responsibility and commitment the more problem. You didn’t stand by your commitment as far as the first 10 days are concerned."Remaining calm, the employee clarified that he wasn’t trying to avoid his duties, saying, “I will do it, sir. I’m not running away from my commitments. I will cover up after I return to the office."
