Chia seeds have become a global health trend. Nutritionists, fitness experts and doctors across the world are urging people to add them to their diets. They are touted as a superfood rich in fiber, plant-based Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and essential amino acids. From weight loss enthusiasts to people managing lifestyle conditions, chia seeds are often seen as a small but powerful addition. But there is a catch - chia seeds can be risky if you consume them the wrong way.Recently, a girl shared her harrowing experience on social media. She had added raw chia seeds to a glass of water and consumed it immediately. Within no time, she began experiencing difficulty swallowing, discomfort and a seizure-like attack that eventually landed her in the hospital.
In her words, 'chia seeds are dangerous.' The truth is that while chia seeds themselves aren’t harmful, the way they are consumed can make all the difference between reaping their benefits or ending up with a serious health scare.
Why Soaking Chia Seeds Matters
If you have ever soaked chia seeds, you would have noticed how they swell up, forming a gel-like texture. That’s because chia seeds can absorb nearly 10–12 times their weight in water. This unique property makes them a great food for satiety and weight management. Chia pudding, for example, keeps you feeling full for hours because the seeds expand in the stomach and slow down digestion. However, this same property also makes them risky when eaten dry. When consumed raw or without pre-soaking, chia seeds can start absorbing liquid inside your throat or stomach, potentially leading to choking, blockages or discomfort. For people with swallowing difficulties, this risk is even higher.
Nutritionists often recommend soaking one tablespoon of chia seeds in a glass of water for at least 30–40 minutes before consuming. Some even suggest soaking overnight for best results. After having chia water or pudding, it’s also advised to drink an extra glass or two of water to aid digestion.
The Wrong Way to Eat Chia Seeds
One of the biggest mistakes people make is simply taking a spoonful of dry chia seeds and gulping it down with water. This is exactly what you should never do. The seeds need time to expand before entering your body. Even sprinkling them raw over cereal or smoothies, something you will often see at restaurants and breakfast buffets can be risky if not paired with enough liquid. Unlike nuts and other seeds, chia needs hydration to be safe and effective.Dr. Kunal Sood, in one of his Instagram health videos, highlighted the many benefits of chia seeds. It supports heart health, aids weight management, improves hair health and even help manage PCOD/PCOS symptoms. But he also emphasised one golden rule: never eat them raw.
