Gulshan Devaiah’s performance as Kulashekhara in the recently released Kantara Chapter 1 has garnered widespread acclaim. His battle with Rishab Shetty’s Berme in the film accounted for cinematically rich
sequences. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, the actor recalled shooting with fire around him. Calling it scary, Gulshan revealed why the sequence had to be executed carefully.
Gulshan Devaiah reveals no green screen was used to film fire sequences
Gulshan clarified that no green screen was used to film Kulashekhara’s death scene, which also included an extensive war between him and Berme. “All of my scenes weren’t shot against green screen,” he said before adding, “Scenes requiring fire were shot without visual effects. It was scary. We had to be covered in fire gel. I had to remember the action and then give a performance. You can’t blindly do these sequences. It had a real fire. Only the blood was fake, but the horse was real.” The actor added, “I was doing that war sequence for 21 nights in about 2 or 3 blocks. I couldn’t do it at a stretch. I would shoot for 10 days and then the Guliga portion was shot before I returned.”
