Khan read out his love letter to the Indian film industry with the release of his directorial debut The Ba***ds Of Bollywood (BoB). The Netflix show is unabashed and self-aware about the realities it was exploring in the layers of humour, melodrama and silliness. Infact, it was a déjà vu to something we've seen before, a previous template by another filmmaker - Farah Khan!To call Aryan as the perfect successor of Farah won't be wrong. Reason? Well, there are many!

Is Aryan Khan, Farah Khan's successor?

Aryan takes us into the underbelly of Bollywood, but not the way we've seen in previous titles like Showtime, Qala or Jubilee. This one laughs at itself, takes a jibe at dozens of film nuances and pokes fun at things that have haunted the business for a long time, from terms like "nepo kids" to "movie mafia." When Farah turned to movie-making from choreography, she did the same.

How has Aryan followed Farah's foot-steps?

We first saw instances of Farah's inherent love for Bollywood in Main Hoon Na. From Shah Rukh Khan's cardigans, Sushmita's turn as Miss Chandani in polka-dot sarees, to the retro-themed

Gori Gori, it was her subtle touch at things that makes Bollywood, until she went full-throttle with Om Shanti Om (OSO) in 2007, and later Tees Maar Khan in 2010. Infact OSO set a benchmark so high, no filmmaker has managed to touch it. Aryan, however, came the closest!

Parallels between Aryan and Farah's filmmaking styles

OSO was based on one of our favourite themes of reincarnation. It takes a dig at Karz (1980), and took us behind the lens, into the real, ruthless world of films where there's no room for second chances. Aryan does the same with BoB. In the form of Rajat Bedi's character Jaraj Saxena, struggling for 15 years to strike the deal, Aryan unleased the dark side of the industry.

But it's not just the darkness. Aryan is pompous in everything he brings to the table. Just like Farah's never-seen-before presentation, with peaked emotions, flamboyant frames, outlandish song sequences that scream attention, Aryan did nothing less. Just like Farah's mockery at the award shows in OSO, Aryan did the same with FilmFirst! In OSO Akshay was nominated for some Nth number of Khiladi, Aryan's BoB put both Rajkummar Rao and Arjun Kapoor in the same Best Actor category.

Aryan Khan - the next Farah Khan!

Viewers were quick to call Aryan the next Farah, and that's a judgment nobody can deny. Brownie points to Aryan because Farah's template is not an easy one to explore. She has often claimed the way she sees and presents cinema is different because of the way she's grown up watching films in a middle-class household. Even though Aryan comes with a silver spoon himself (!), he's managed that. If Farah gave a vintage twist, Aryan raises the curtain for the new generation. Interestingly, it was Shah Rukh Khan who backed Farah when she tried something on her own lines.
