Netflix changes plans, Stranger Things 5 Finale to get big screen release
Initially, Netflix had planned for the Season 5 finale to debut exclusively on the streamer, but the plan has now changed. The theatrical release is set for December 31 at 5 p.m. PT, perfectly timed with the global streaming premiere, and will run through January 1, 2026. This gives fans the chance to celebrate the epic conclusion of Hawkins’ adventures in a fully immersive setting.Excited about the decision, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer shared their enthusiasm. “We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters, it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to Ted, Bela and everyone at Netflix for making it happen,” they said in a statement. “Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect, dare we say bitchin’, way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”ALSO READ: Stranger Things: Duffer Bros Tease 'Vecna 2.0' In Season 5, As Jamie Campbell Bower Reveals He Took Character's HAND As Souvenir
The struggle for theatrical release
In a recent Variety cover story, the Duffer Brothers emphasised how important the theatrical experience is for their fans. “People don’t get to experience how much time and effort is spent on sound and picture, and they’re seeing it at reduced quality,” Matt said. “More than that, it’s about experiencing it at the same time with fans.”Ross added, “That would be amazing, because the fans could be there with other fans, and experience it as a communal thing, it would be incredible.” After Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, had earlier said that a theatrical release was not required as enough fans were tuning in for the show already, hopes were dim. But the latest announcement will make Stranger Things fans really happy.
