Former US President Barack Obama recently met a 102-year-old woman, complimenting her on her good health and asking her the secret to longevity. Obama shared the exchange with Susan on his social media
platform X with the caption: "Susan, I hope I look as good as you at 102!" In the video, Obama is heard asking, “Well, you know what I really want to know... what do you eat so I can look like you in a few years? Is it just good genes?" The centenarian laughed and said, "Them greens. Cornbread." Someone accompanying her said, "And the bacon every morning," making Obama laugh. "I'm sure that's what the doctor ordered," he quipped.
What is longevity?
Longevity simply refers to leading a long life. In the United States, experts say life expectancy has increased dramatically since 1900, when the average lifespan was 47 years. Today, people born in 2022 can expect to live 77.5 years on average. Experts estimate that about 25 per cent of the variation in human life span is determined by genetics, and the rest is attributed in large part to how we take care of our bodies. What promotes longevity?
According to doctors, a few simple things you can do for a healthy life and living long include:Healthy diet
What you eat has a direct impact on the cells in your body, which in turn has an impact on longevity. A healthy diet that comprises fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lots of nutrient-filled food provides cells with vital sources of energy and keeps them stable and working as they should. Healthy foods also support boosting immunity against chronic diseases – defending against infections and other health threats and protecting your cells from damage. For a long and disease-free life, experts recommend quitting foods that are high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and processed foods.Regular workouts
Studies say physical activity can positively contribute to a long and healthy life due to the many positive effects it has on your body. A few of these include a stronger heart and lungs, strong muscles, and a healthy weight. Apart from physical, exercising also has good mental health benefits, as it can improve your mood and help you sleep better. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults should get at least- 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, or
- 75 minutes a week of vigorous movement, or
- An equivalent combination of both intensities
