people were killed, while 12 others were injured and are undergoing treatment, as a three-storey building collapsed in Madhya Pradesh's Indore. 14 members of a family were trapped under the debris after a building in Indore's Ranipura area on Monday night following rains. 12 people were admitted to Maharaja Yeshwantrao Government Hospital (MYH) following the rescue operation and are currently undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, two people were killed in the incident. The deceased have been identified as Alifa and Faheem.
Rescue operations were carried out by joint teams of the Municipal Corporation, the local police, district administration, State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), and Civil Defence, with assistance from local residents. Heavy machinery, including excavators and JCBs, was deployed to clear the debris. The five-hour rescue operation is now over, District Collector Shivam Verma said.According to Verma, the front portion of the building had recently been rebuilt, but the back portion was old. "We will investigate the condition of the building's foundation," he said, as reported by PTI.The building was constructed without proper beams and columns, and the continuous water accumulation around the building is believed to have caused the collapse, reported ANI, citing officials. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said that preliminary information suggests the building was 8 to 10 years old. The mayor said that a portion of the building fell on a neighbouring building, too.Commissioner of Police Santosh Kumar Singh said that the building had commercial shops on the ground floor and residential quarters above.Eyewitnesses said that, as a precautionary measure, electricity has been cut off in the Ranipura area for relief and rescue operations.
