Indian Army Launches First Exclusive Freight Train On Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link, Hauls Winter Supplies and Kashmiri Apples
Jammu,
September 15: In a historic first, the Indian Army has launched an exclusive freight train on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), transforming logistics in the treacherous Himalayan region. Running from BD Bari to Anantnag on September 12–13, the train carried an impressive 753 metric tonnes of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS), ensuring frontline units are fully equipped for harsh winter conditions.
Strategic Shift in Winter Preparedness
The new rail-powered supply system replaces convoys that once struggled through snow-clogged mountain passes, signaling a strategic evolution in Army logistics. The initiative ensures operational readiness is maintained even in extreme weather, demonstrating the Army’s focus on innovation and resilience.
Civil-Military Collaboration: Kashmiri Apples to Nationwide Markets
The return journey of the freight train will carry Kashmiri apples to major markets across India. For decades, fruit growers in the Union Territory faced losses due to highway closures and limited transport options. Rail logistics now offers speed, reliability, and nationwide reach, creating a lifeline for farmers and local economy.
Government Leaders Applaud Initiative
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated: “We want special cargo trains with refrigerated rakes to operate from here to send goods outside Jammu & Kashmir. Today, it has become possible that two railway rakes are being used for cargo.”He expressed gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on social media and discussed logistics improvements with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, highlighting the challenges along NH-44. Abdullah emphasized that fruit growers’ frustrations were understandable and that concrete steps would be implemented within 24 hours to stabilize supply chains.
LG Manoj Sinha Flags Off First Dedicated Parcel Train
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first dedicated parcel train from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar, Delhi, calling the service a significant step for Kashmiri apple growers to transport their produce efficiently to various parts of the country.
