Tourists are welcomed almost everywhere — in most cities and countries. However, debates often erupt when incidents of tourists littering or damaging places come to light. Many such incidents, when caught
on camera, tend to go viral. In a similar case, a video is going viral showing a woman from Japan — a local — issuing a strong plea to tourists: “Please don’t come if you cannot follow the rules or respect the people and culture.” The video has sparked a major debate online. The clip was shared on Instagram by a user identified as Yuriko Toba, with the caption, “My hometown Kamakura is facing problems because of a few visitors who don’t respect the local culture. Kamakura Kōkō-mae Station, known from Slam Dunk, is not a tourist spot but a quiet neighborhood. Yet more than 2,000 people visit every day, sometimes leaving trash, trespassing into sacred places, or causing trouble for residents. Please imagine if this were your own town. As a fellow photographer, I ask for kindness and respect — so that taking photos will never be seen as a nuisance.”
