Assamese singer Zubeen Garg tragically passed away after a scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. He was in the city to attend the North East Festival, where he was scheduled to perform on the day of the incident. Despite being rescued from the sea by Singapore police and rushed to the hospital, where he was placed in the ICU, Garg succumbed to his injuries. In the wee hours of Sunday, the mortal remains of the singer reached Delhi airport. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma was seen paying homage to the singer.

In a post shared by Himanta Biswa Sarma on his official X handle (Formerly known as Twitter), he wrote, "Paid homage to our beloved Zubeen at Delhi airport. To be honest, his demise is yet to sink in - it all feels like a bad dream. Travel safe, Zubeen! You will live on in each of our hearts - FOREVER." In yet another update, news agency ANI confirmed that Zubeen's mortal remains will be taken to Guwahati from Delhi where his fans and family members will offer their last respects to the late singer.The post reads, "Mortal remains of singer Zubeen Garg, lovingly called the 'King of Humming' by his fans, have arrived at the IGI Airport in Delhi. Garg was a celebrated figure in the music world, particularly known for his contribution to Assamese music and his iconic Bollywood hit Ya Ali from Gangster. His sudden death has left a massive void, especially in Assam, where he was beloved by fans for his unique voice and connection with the people. Zubeen Garg’s musical career spanned various languages and genres, making him a versatile artist. He was fluent in over 40 languages and dialects, including Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, and several regional languages. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, he could play over 12 instruments. He was also the highest-paid singer in Assam and was honoured as the Guest Artist of the Year at the Assam Convention in 2011.Born in Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen was raised in an artistic family. He began singing at a young age and was trained by his mother and several other notable mentors. Zubeen’s personal life included the tragedy of losing his sister in a car accident in 2002, which led him to release the album Xixhu in her memory. He was married to Garima Saikia in 2002 and was known for his irreligious stance, rejecting caste or religious affiliations.
