Robo Shankar passed away at the age of 46 due to ill health. He breathed his last on September 18 at 9.05 pm at a private hospital. Following his demise, several of Robo Shankar's colleagues from the Tamil film industry paid their last respects. Actor and politician, Thalapathy Vijay has taken to social media to mourn the loss of his Puli co-star.

In his post, Thalapathy Vijay said that he was shocked and saddened by Robo Shankar's death. His post read " I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of my friend Mr. Robo Shankar. With his sense of humor, he carved a unique place for himself from the small screen to the silver screen. He was a gentleman who mingled with everyone with affection.I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends grieving the loss of my friend Mr. Robo Shankar. I pray to God that his soul may rest in peace."
Actors Vijay and Robo Shankar have worked together in Chimbu Deven's 2015 film, Puli. Interestingly, Robo Shankar's daughter Indraja worked with Vijay in Atlee's Bigil.
Robo Shankar was diagnosed with jaundice two years back, for which he underwent treatment. His drastic weight loss as a result of the treatment caused significant concern among fans. The prefix 'Robo' was given to him due to his performances of robot dances in Kalakka Povadhu Yaaru, a reality TV show that showcased stand-up comedians. His initial roles in films like Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and Vaayai Moodi Pesavum got him his breakthrough role in Dhanush's Maari (2015).Robo Shankar is survived by his wife, Priyanka; daughter, Indraja; and one grandson.
