
New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has turned an author and his first book "Why The Constitution Matters" has hit the stands. Justice Chandrachud told Times Now in an exclusive interview: "Book seeks to explains to citizens role of constitutional values influencing the course of events in shaping the society that we are, we aspire to be and in shaping to be values citizens hold close to their heart .. my book weaves together my experiences of law, justice and judging in a career of nearly twenty-five years on the bench. It is an invocation to every citizen to engage in realising the true potential of the Constitution". "The book has been published by Penguin Random house and I have requested the publishers to contribute
my royalty from the book to my alma mater Campus Law Centre, Delhi and that will be used in the memory of three of my most distinguished law teachers Professor Moolchand Sharma who taught us Law Of Contracts,Dr Lotika Sarkar who taught us gender and criminology and Dr B Sivaramayyah who taught us Law and Poverty .Three brilliant professors..they had a great impact on my own life ..I thought this is just an humble tribute in shaping me into the person that I have become", he said. As a Supreme Court judge and Chief Justice of India Justice Chandradhud delivered several pathbreaking historic landmark judgments emphasising on freedom of speech, gender equality, women's rights, rights of the differently abled, environment protection. Shedding light on the content in his book, Justice Chandrachud told Times Now: "Its an anthology of my speeches lot of speeches deal with fundamental constitutional issues ..it has the sounds and silence of the constitution ..areas where the constitution speaks areas where constitution is silent and what you draw out of the silences of the constitution …it speaks of subjects close to my heart like freedom of speech and expression , technology, gender, marginalisation and a host of subjects which are relevant to law life and constitution society as well." Asked why was there a delay in his book debut despite him being passionate about literature, he said,"Distinguished judges of SC and HC have written books while they held office. Delay was on my part because of pressure of work, responsibilities of office. I always wanted to publish when I held office but somehow it dint work out".
