A video of an American woman narrating her experience with healthcare in India has gone viral, drawing attention to the stark differences in cost and accessibility compared to the United States. In the video shared on Instagram, Kristen Fischer recounts how she badly cut her thumb while chopping vegetables at home. After trying unsuccessfully to stop the bleeding, she decided to seek medical help."It was bleeding a lot, and I tried everything I could to stop it. Finally, I turned to Tim and said, I think I need to go get some stitches."She described cycling to a nearby hospital with her finger wrapped in a bandage. "They brought me into their little emergency room, and I showed them the bandage covered in blood. Nurses and doctors tried to stop the bleeding, and eventually,
one nurse wrapped it in a way that worked. They told me I might not even need stitches."Later, when she went to the reception to pay, she was only charged Rs 50. "The whole ordeal took about 45 minutes," she said, contrasting this with the United States, where "if you step foot into an emergency room, you'll be charged a minimum of 2,000 dollars just right off the bat.""This story is crazy to me for 2 reasons," she explained. "One. That I had a hospital only 5 minutes from my house in my neighborhood. India has easy access to doctors, clinics, and hospitals. I feel so safe living in India knowing I am just minutes away from emergency help if needed.""Two. They only charged me 50 rupees for the whole experience. For those who don't know, that is like 60 cents. Healthcare is so much more affordable in India than in the USA where most insurance premiums cost $1-2k/month!" she remarked."Just another reason why I love Indian healthcare so much," Fischer concluded.
