The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie, written and directed by Jenny Han, will follow Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Christopher Briney) after their Paris reunion as they embark on happily ever after. However, some fans suggested Amazon Prime Video explore a prequel series that follows the friendship of Belly's mother, Laurel (Jackie Chung), and Conrad's mother, Susannah (Rachel Blanchard). In a post-finale interview with The Hollywood Reporter, both Chung and Blanchard revealed that they were on board a prequel series. When asked about who they would cast as their younger selves, Blanchard shared, "I thought Maddie Ziegler and then someone also mentioned Elle Fanning." While Chung named, "I recently saw Maybe Happy Ending, so I was thinking maybe Helen J. Shen from that [Broadway] show. I think she’s pretty brilliant." She said, "I’d love to see where [Susannah] was with her art and the decision to let that go for a little while, and really the beginning of our friendship." Chung added, "I think it’d be interesting to see how Laurel decided to become a writer. Obviously, how she met everyone in her life, all these important relationships. There’s mention of John and the basement wedding (laughs). I would love to see that." She was also keen to see the styles and wardrobe the two friends would have during their college days.
