Charlie Hunnam on tracking down Ed Gein's real voice recordings
In the Netflix series, the actor has modulated his voice to sound childlike to match Gein. Hunnam was able to do so because he got his hands on one rare recording. Director Max Winkler, who directed six episodes on the series, told Variety, "Our best researchers couldn’t get [the tape]. But Charlie got it, because he’s Charlie and he does crazy shit.”

The actor revealed that he asked Joshua Kunau, producer of the documentary Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein for the audio of a 70-minute interview with the serial killer done the night he was arrested. It had not been legally admissible, but it was still archival audio of the man that Hunnam had to emulate. “I started to see him through a series of affectations to please his mother. Charlie Hunnam visited Gein's grave after filming Monster
After completing the show, the 45-year-old actor visited Gein's grave in Wisconsin to put the dark character behind him and move ahead in his life. On the Today show, Hunnam stated that he "hoped we had told his story honestly at the very least, and [I] didn't invite him to come on the journey with me moving forward. I was ready to say goodbye to him and that be the end."
