As the Air Quality Index (AQI) levels continue to plummet across Delhi-NCR after Diwali, experts have time and again expressed worry for the health of the general population – especially children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Another risk group is pregnant women. It is important to understand that the festival of Diwali can turn into a nightmare due to air pollution. Hence, understanding the dangers and taking precautions is essential for everyone's safety.Dr Uma Mishra, Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida, says, "The smoke and particulate matter released during the festivities can increase air pollution. It can be harmful for pregnant women and children. The fine particulate matter (PM2.5)
from firecrackers can enter the lungs, triggering respiratory and even problems by stealing the peace of mind."Here is how it can affect pregnant women."Pregnant women, when exposed to heavy air pollution, may face complications such as reduced oxygen supply, increased risk of high blood pressure, and inflammation. According to various studies, prolonged exposure can impact fetal growth and it may also increase the risk of preterm birth," says Dr Uma.She further adds that expectant mothers often experience breathing difficulties and fatigue when exposed to polluted air. The smoke can trigger asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). There can be other problems, such as compromised vision, as the smoke can enter the eyes. Many will experience symptoms such as redness ofthe eyes, pain and inflammation. How Should Pregnant Women Stay Protected From Air Pollution?
- Avoid going outside when firecrackers are being burst.
- Keep windows and doors closed when the air quality outside is poor.
- Air purifiers can help to reduce indoor pollution and breathe freely.
- Try to wear a mask outdoors to prevent air pollution.
- Avoid outdoor exercise or strenuous activity when there is smoke outside.
- Drink plenty of water, at least 12-15 glasses per day.
- Opt for antioxidant-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. This will boost your immunity.
